26: Men that look like sharks
Plus chaotic life advice, red flags and Taylor Swift impersonations
Wow! Hello! Happy Summer!
Welcome to NS 26.
It’s been a few weeks! At the start of June I was finalizing the physical neighborhood newsletter I edit which ate up most of my free time. I also visited New York for the first time! I got to read poetry in a garden for a zine fest. And of course, there was a lot of karaoke.
Onto the content!
My neighbor is on TikTok
So the other night I walked to my local market to buy a lemon and ran into my neighbor. I walked back to my apartment sat down and opened TikTok. The first thing to pop up on my FYP was my neighbor. The content itself had 0 relevance to the content I typically see, so it was very strange. I won’t post it here out or respect for their privacy.
I keep location services switched off and I am not connected to them on any social media, nor do I have their number programmed into my phone.
I am curious how impactful your IP address is on the content filtered through to the personalized FYP algorithm. NS 27 will cover what I learn about this.
This TikTok haunted me in New York
Occasionally a video will get stuck in my head and won’t leave until I watch it a handful of times. I saw this one just before my flight. I couldn’t stop imagining the audio from it while I was in NYC. The caption in the video was “Taylor swift impersonator.” The woman in the video is singing Taylor Swift’s Welcome to New York.
Impersonating Taylor Swift’s stage presence
I’ve seen a handful a few other videos involving people imitating & making fun of Taylor Swift’s stage presence. Here’s an example, it’s quite dramatic. Thank you to Amelia for helping me track this one down. The song used is Call Me Maybe by Carly Rae Jepsen but the drama is accurate.
Here’s another one:
Red flag TikTok
On TikTok it is quite trendy to talk about red flags, relationship advice and personality types. It is often misguided or actively harmful. The the below video makes fun of red flag videos made by and for men:
Peak tarot comedy
Neopets food IRL
@neopiankween recreates food from Neopets in real life. This one features a series of Omelettes inspired by the Giant Omelette.
A possible murder story
I saw @zachahry appear on my FYP with the following video:
After the video was posted they did a “Storytime” on what happened, but the videos have since been removed. Articles I tracked didn’t connect to the story. Either the videos were taken down due to it being an ongoing investigation or the story itself is fake. I’m leaning towards it being fake, but I’ll keep an eye on it.
Men who look like sharks
I thought this was funny. The original:
Additional commentary:
A candy fridge
I was disturbed at this fridge video and was relieved to see a relatable reaction to it.
Extreme cupboards
Chaotic life advice
@lolellakoundji has become a favorite creator recently with short videos featuring hot takes & chaotic advice.
Cursed Pride
The pride section at Goodwill:
A gay Ouija board:
A confused Billboard that alternates from “Love is Love” to a Chik-fil-A advertisement:
Cool socks
A very personal YouTube karaoke channel
I saw this TikTok on my feed:
I had to explore the actual channel. It’s real. The first video was posted three months ago. Here is the most recent one, it was posted today:
Crab Season
I started making playlists for each of the 12 zodiacs. The first one is for fellow June & July Cancer Crab babies:
I will include the next playlist in a late-July newsletter.
